Natural Beekeeping Symposium

Come join Dr. Tom Seeley and Dr. Leo Sharashkin with the Charleston Area Beekeepers Association for a Natural Beekeeping Symposium!

November 16, 2019, Charleston SC (Trident technical College, Thornley Campus;formally the Main campus)

Truly a world-class event with a mind-blowing program! Join us for a full day with the

world’s leading bee scientist Dr. Tom Seeley and a full-time natural beekeeper Dr. Leo

Sharashkin. Your views on bees and beekeeping will never be the same after you hear

them present! Discover the science and keys to success in natural beekeeping.

Bees have been thriving without human intervention for a very long time. Today, we

have solid evidence that wild honeybees successfully carry on despite the presence of

mites and other problems. If we learn from bees’ natural endurance, we can be more

successful in managing our hives.

Dr. Tom Seeley is Professor of Biology at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. A leading researcher of honeybee ecology and collective intelligence, he is widely known for his award-winning books Honeybee Democracy and The Wisdom of the Hive. His recent research explores how wild honey bees survive Varroa without any treatments, and what beekeeping practices could help mimic the success of the wild colonies. Dr. Seeley’s new book The Lives of Bees: The Untold Story of the Honey Bee in the Wild is released May 2019.

Dr. Leo Sharashkin is a full-time natural beekeeper in the Ozarks of southern Missouri.

His treatment-free apiaries attract visitors from all over the world. Dr. Leo catches local wild swarms, uses easy-to-build horizontal hives, and leads natural beekeeping workshops around the country and internationally. He is editor of Keeping Bees With a Smile, a comprehensive book on natural beekeeping, and a regular contributor to American Bee Journal, Bee Culture, and other major publications.
